“It is amazing to me how many good people we have here. When someone new comes in the door, 100% of the time a member will introduce themselves and welcome that new person. This is the most accepting group of folks that I’ve ever been around. I think that comes from realizing that we are all on our own fitness journey. We’ve all started at different places but, we do this together and that makes a huge difference.” – Coach Matt

With my first month of doing Crossfit behind me, I feel the need to share my observations. 1.I’ve been working out hard for a year, 5-6 days a week, 3 of those days I usually worked out 2x a day…walking out of “the box” after completing my first official non-community workout…I felt like I had never worked out a day in my life!!!! I do, however, believe that my year of hard work aided in my ability to catch on pretty quickly but now I don’t feel the need to have to squeeze in 9 workouts in a week…I get 4 workouts in most weeks, and I feel great!! 2. I HAVE NO MORE KNEE PROBLEMS!!! Since December, my knees have been killing me…after every work out my knees were shot…it hurt to walk up stairs,it hurt to walk down stairs!!!!! This month has included lots of running, box jumps, and squats…NO KNEE PAIN!! How awesome is that?!! 3.I am not achy when I get out of bed…I don’t feel like I am a 70 year old granny trapped in a 26 year old’s body!! The only aches and pains I have are muscle aches from killer workouts! I’m going to give it a few more months before I post anything about body results but I do have to say my husband has seen more of a difference in my body in the past month than he has in the past year … All that to say is that Crossfit works… it really works!!!! Thank you CrossFit Combustion, Matthew Boyd, and Greg Boyd for this awesome opportunity!
What is Crossfit? Yes, it’s a quest for elite fitness, but it’s much more than that. On my first day when I looked at the workout we were asked to do, I thought to myself… There’s no way! But, somehow I did complete the workout, maybe not as fast as others or not using as much weight, but I did it, and I’ve continued to do it. I have lost 45 pounds and 32 (combined) inches over the past 4 months, but that’s not the real difference. It’s my mindset. My view of being active with my family as a father and a husband. My view of food and why eating like crap doesn’t do anything for you, and eating “Clean” makes all the difference. Crossfit is completely different then going into a gym with a “trainer” slinging barbells around and running on a treadmill for hours. From day one you realize, all these movements have a purpose. The camaraderie I feel with the other athletes at the box is what helps push you to “Finish Strong” when your mind tells you ” You can’t do this”. The reality is, You Can! You can do way more than you think. Crossfit has been a life changer for me and my family. Matt and Greg at Crossfit Combustion have forever changed my view of fitness, health and food, and given me the confidence to say “I CAN DO IT”, and “I WILL Do IT”. All you have to do is show up and try!. At 40 years old and 326 lbs. I took the leap…. and I’m never looking back!
My name is Roy Mangrum. Day one of my crossfit journey I was 313 pounds at 5’11”, walking into the “Box” for the first time I was intimidated, nervous, and a little insecure being at any Crossfit Box and training alongside everyone else. A former competitive power lifter with years of injuries, declining mobility, and the thoughts that “well this is the best it’s going to get.” I still trained to “stay in shape” but I was way heavier than I should be and be it that I might be strong, I had issues tying my shoes, getting out of bed in the morning and walking across the room. I had tried numerous times to lose the weight I had gained during my power-lifting days, but never seemed to find the right recipe to make the weight loss happen.
Day one of my Crossfit journey sums up the attitude, atmosphere and camaraderie you will find at Crossfit Combustion. It was the Saturday open workout, and I was on a team with two members who were already in great shape. It was a competition that day and we were ahead beating the other teams, and it came down to me finishing my burpees for the win. Well, as you could imagine I was struggling to say the least. My two team mates had already completed their last set of burpees. One might think they would be upset we were now trailing the other teams, but that wasn’t the case. They BOTH dropped down beside me completing rep for rep beside me routing me on all the while. Afterwards, all I could think was how amazing it was that everyone is there for each other. Regardless of your background, size, shape well all have a common goal and we are all in this thing together.
At this point I have been at Crossfit Combustion for 2 full months. I have lost 26 pounds, went from a 12” box jump to a 20” box jump. I went from walking the 400 meter warm-up to running, from collapsing at the end of the workout to feeling recovered in mere minutes. The knee pain that I lived with for the past 5 years is completely gone, and in the mornings, I jump out of bed with zero joint pain.
With anything in this world, you get out it what you put into it. With that being said I say this, regardless of your goals from weight loss, improved mobility, better quality of life, or being a competitive athlete the coaches at Crossfit Combustion will realize those goals with you.
